The Lake City U.S. Army Ammunition Plant produces millions of rounds annually.
Located in Independence, Missouri, the U.S. Army’s Lake City Ammunition Plant is the largest producer of small-caliber ammunition in the world, with an annual production of approximately 1.5 billion rounds. While owned by the federal government, the plant is currently operated by Alliant Techsystems Inc. (ATK), a defense company. ATK took over operations from Olin Corp., which had previously operated the facility for several years. If you desire employment at a U.S. Army ammunition plant, the Lake City facility offers numerous career options.
The Lake City factory is a modern manufacturing facility, so it requires the talents of electrical and computer engineers. This job requires at least five years of experience, a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or computer engineering, experience with C and C++ programming languages, experience with MATLAB and labVIEW software, plus the ability to obtain an industrial security clearance. Strong project ownership skills, the ability to work as part of a collaborative team, experience with sensor technology and familiarity with high-speed manufacturing environments round out the position’s requirements.
While the Lake City Ammunition Plant has only one customer, the U.S. Department of Defense, it still requires the talents and abilities of contract specialists. If you have a bachelor’s degree in a business discipline, this may be a job you could qualify for. Contract specialists work under general supervision. The position requires excellent word processing skills, professional demeanor, the ability to interact with senior staff members, strong organizational skills, and a working knowledge of federal acquisition regulations and negotiating techniques.
Because high-speed manufacturing facilities and equipment require regular maintenance, if you possess verifiable shop floor skills, a position as a maintenance supervisor might be a good fit for you. Maintenance supervisors assign laborers and craftsmen to perform various tasks, including maintaining infrastructure. They also oversee department maintenance budgets, maintain good employee relations, provide emergency on-call support and work to achieve 100 percent availability of all ammunition production apparatus. This position requires a minimum of three years of experience in a similar industrial production facility.
If you have earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, another career path at the Lake City Ammunition Plant is as a manufacturing engineer. You must be proficient with Microsoft Office tools, autoCAD (CAD = computer assisted design) software and comfortable with general engineering principles. You should also have the ability to multitask, be knowledgeable about ammunition and weapons, and have previous exposure and experience interpreting military specifications.
