Many people say the worst thing about quitting smoking, even worse than the withdrawal, irritability and cravings, is the weight gain. Part of it is the decrease in metabolism, and part is that often food is substituted for cigarettes. However there are things you can do to limit the amount of weight gained while you stop a bad smoking habit.

1. Eat small meals, and eat often to keep your energy level high. Small, healthy snack so munch on are best; veggie sticks, sunflower seeds, even sugar free hard candy can keep your mo0uth occupied and cut down on cravings.
2. Stay away from others who smoke. Try to find a restaurant that doesn’t allow smoking at all, if you want to go out. Avoid being around smoke if at all possible as it will trigger cravings.
3. Avoid alcohol. Most people who drink and smoke do it together, and indulging in one can make it harder to resist the other. Also, the calories from the alcohol will not be burnt off by the smoking as before. Drink water instead.
4. Exercise as much as possible. Teach your body to kick start its own metabolism, and you will release endorphins that give you a natural high without the nicotine. Gradually your body will learn to look forward to a brisk walk or jog, and you will feel more energized.
5. Resist the urge to panic if you gain 5 or 10 pounds the first few months you stop smoking; this is normal, and should drop off as you learn encourage your metabolism to operate without the stimulus of nicotine. As you exercise more and learn to live without smoking you will feel much better and have more energy.
