Turkey produces almost twice as much pepper as Spain, 6 times more than the Netherlands, and 18 times more than Morocco

The world’s pepper production has been increasing almost non-stop in the last decade. According to Faostat data, in 2020 the world produced a total of 36,136.99 million kilos of pepper in 2,069,990 hectares, achieving an average yield of 1.75 kilos per square meter.
That year, Turkey produced almost twice as many peppers as Spain, 6 times more peppers than the Netherlands, and 18 times more peppers than Morocco, according to Hortoinfo. The Netherlands achieved the best yields with 28.1 kilos of pepper per square meter, i.e. 315.06% more than Spain, which only obtained 6.77 kg/m², despite being the second-best performing country among the top 20 largest world producers. Turkey, Egypt, and Morocco, which also compete against Spain, produced 2.88 kg/m², 1.81 kg/m², and 3.47 kg/m², respectively.
It is also worth noting that China produces a little less than half of the world’s peppers and that the top 5 largest producers of peppers (China, Mexico, Turkey, Indonesia, and Spain) account for 72.92% of the world’s production: China with 46.08% of world production, Mexico with 7.8%, Indonesia with 7.67%, Turkey with 7.3%, and Spain with 4.07%.
The world’s largest producersChina is the world’s largest producer. In 2020, it harvested 16,650.85 million kilos of peppers on 734,961 hectares, with a yield of 2.27 kg/m².
It was followed by Mexico with 2,818.44 million kilos produced on 157,911 hectares and a yield of 1.78 kg/m².
Indonesia was the world’s third-biggest producer with 2,772.59 million kilos, an area of 314,772 hectares, and a yield of 0.88 kg/m².
Turkey ranked fourth with 2,636.9 million kilos, 91,491 hectares, and a yield of 2.88 kg/m².
Spain ranked fifth with 1,472.85 million kilos, 21,750 hectares, and an average yield of 6.77 kg/m².
